Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This marks the first time the former CJ has publicly declared his political ambitions — a move that has stirred national interest and sparked conversations about leadership and accountability in Kenya.

A Bid Born from Concern

Speaking during a live interview on NTV, Maraga stated that his decision was fueled by the numerous issues currently facing the country. He expressed deep concern about the treatment of young people and the general state of governance, which he described as deteriorating.

"This decision stems from what has been happening in the country," said Maraga. "To see our young people being mishandled the way they have been is extremely worrying."

Maraga revealed that the idea of running for the presidency came after wide consultations with friends, colleagues, and citizens from various backgrounds. After reflecting on Kenya’s current leadership, he concluded that bold action was needed.

“We can’t sit back and allow a few individuals to run this country into the ground,” he said. “It is time we take leadership seriously, and that is why I have decided to run for the presidency in 2027.”

Subtle Signs Before the Announcement

Even before this official declaration, Maraga had been signaling a move toward active politics. Over recent months, he has been seen engaging with various groups, especially the youth, across different counties. These meetings were largely seen as consultative forums where he listened to the grievances of ordinary Kenyans.

He has also been vocal in criticizing the Kenya Kwanza administration, particularly on issues relating to governance, corruption, and misuse of public resources.

A Promise to Fight Corruption

One of the pillars of Maraga’s presidential campaign is his strong stance against corruption. During a recent town hall meeting in Dandora, he pledged to eliminate what he termed the “culture of stealing from Kenyans.” He emphasized that most of Kenya’s challenges are self-inflicted due to unchecked embezzlement of public funds.

“If we can stop the theft of public funds, our teachers and doctors won't need to strike for pay, and our hospitals will have enough medicine,” said Maraga. “Corruption is the root of most of our problems. If we can deal with it decisively, Kenya will progress.”

A Call for Accountability and Ethical Leadership

Throughout his legal career, Maraga was known for his integrity, most notably when he nullified the 2017 presidential election — a landmark decision that won him praise for upholding the rule of law. His foray into politics brings with it the hope of restoring ethical leadership and strengthening institutions.

In recent weeks, Maraga has also called for accountability over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody. He has demanded arrests of high-ranking officials and described such incidents as unacceptable under any administration.

Similarly, he condemned the recent shooting of Boniface Kariuki, a Nairobi street vendor, describing the act as “cold and inhuman.” These strong positions reflect a leadership style rooted in justice and human dignity.

Final Thoughts

David Maraga’s entry into the 2027 presidential race is a bold move that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape. As a respected former Chief Justice with a reputation for standing by the truth, his campaign is expected to resonate with Kenyans yearning for honest and transformative leadership.

His message is clear: Kenya needs a new direction — one that puts people first, eliminates corruption, and rebuilds trust in public institutions.

Whether he succeeds or not, Maraga’s candidacy is already sending a powerful message: the era of silence is over, and it’s time for integrity to lead.
