Đorđe Petrović Considering Chelsea Exit, Skips Club World Cup Trip — Report

It appears Đorđe Petrović isn’t interested in navigating Chelsea’s crowded goalkeeper situation and is instead prioritizing a move where he can secure a consistent starting role. According to a Telegraph exclusive, the Serbian goalkeeper requested not to be included in Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S. so he could focus on his future — specifically, finding a club where he could be the undisputed first-choice keeper.

As a result, his spot on the traveling squad has been filled by young American goalie Gaga Slonina.

Despite this development, the relationship between Petrović and Chelsea reportedly remains professional and respectful. Should a permanent transfer not materialize, Petrović is expected to rejoin the team for pre-season training in July, though that could lead to a potential loan move.

It's a disappointing turn for fans who were hopeful Petrović would get another chance to claim Chelsea’s starting spot. He had a strong stint at Strasbourg, where he impressed enough to warrant another opportunity at Chelsea — but he may have sensed that he’s unlikely to be given a fair shot given the competition.

Strasbourg, part of Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership group, are reportedly interested in keeping him. However, Petrović might be eyeing bigger opportunities in England or elsewhere in Europe.

Chelsea supporters should remember Petrović’s standout performances — he ranked fifth in save percentage and second in passes completed among goalkeepers in Europe during his time at Strasbourg. His predecessor there, Matz Sels, went on to greater success, and Petrović could follow a similar path.
