Kenya Meteorological Department Predicts More Rain Across Several Counties This Week
Residents in various parts of Kenya should prepare for more rainfall this week, according to the latest weather advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
In its update released on Monday, June 9, the department stated that regions including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley itself, and coastal areas will continue receiving rainfall from Tuesday, June 10, through Saturday, June 14.
Counties such as Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Laikipia, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka are expected to experience cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals during the week. Afternoon showers are likely on Tuesday and Saturday, while the rest of the afternoons (Wednesday to Friday) are predicted to be mostly sunny. Nighttime skies will generally remain partly cloudy, with possible showers on Wednesday night.
Motorists in Nairobi are already facing challenges as flooding continues to affect major roads during rainy spells.
Temperature forecasts for these counties indicate highs of up to 27°C and lows dropping to around 6°C.
In the eastern counties of Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as the inland sections of Tana River County, weather patterns will include morning clouds clearing to sunshine and clear nights throughout the week. Temperatures in these areas are expected to range from 12°C at night to highs of 32°C during the day.
Meanwhile, coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and the coastal part of Tana River will see scattered showers throughout the week during mornings, afternoons, and nights—except on Friday morning and Saturday afternoon, which are forecasted to be dry and sunny. Maximum temperatures will peak at 32°C, with nighttime temperatures around 21°C.
Counties surrounding Lake Victoria and in the Rift Valley—such as Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Nakuru, Nandi, and others—can expect sunny mornings with afternoon thunderstorms and evening cloud cover. High temperatures are projected to reach 29°C, with lows of about 8°C.
In the arid and semi-arid counties of Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, and Isiolo, residents will continue experiencing sunny days and mild, partly cloudy nights. Temperatures here may reach highs of 37°C, while the lowest nighttime temperatures will hover around 17°C.
Similarly, Turkana and Samburu counties are expected to remain hot and dry throughout the day, with cooler and partly cloudy conditions at night. These counties will see daytime highs of around 36°C and nighttime lows of 8°C.
Heavy rainfall and flash floods have already been reported in areas like Waiyaki Way in Nairobi, where roads have become impassable due to standing water.
Residents in all affected regions are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this rainy period.
